Capen Village is a proposed on-campus housing development to offer 145 beds for juniors and seniors. Approximately 15 wood-framed houses between Winthrop and Fairmount Streets would be remodeled to meet sustainability standards and to house between 3 and 12 students each.

The first phase of development is proposed to take place by Fall 2018, with the full development complete by Fall 2019.

While construction is gearing up to take place January 2017, the social and programmatic vision of Capen Village has not yet been determined. TCU President Benya Kraus, with support from the TCU Senate A&P Committee, has proposed that this village include social themed housing and be structured with the following 5 key principles:

CAPEN VILLAGE

5 Key Principles

  • Student Driven

    • Themes would be selected through a “student pitch” process

  • Investment into the broader community

    • What will these themed houses give back to the rest of the Tufts community? How can they be engaged with the rest of campus?

      • Community programming?

      • Weekly dinners?

      • Joint themed events?

      • Departmental & faculty partnerships

  • Diversifying Social Space

    • Would establish meaningfully inclusive & attractive alternatives to current social life options

  • Responsive to the social environment

    • Would allow for a changing & dynamic social ecosystem, responsive to the changing campus climate and culture

  • Co-responsible to the campus and to each other

    • Communal living that would deepen relationships between residents, as well as fosters a community of care through repeated giving

What do you think about these principles?

ABOUT US

Brown & Blueprint is a TCU Senate initiative started in response to the "Student Life Review Committee Report," which addresses challenges to and opportunities for a vibrant and diverse social life at Tufts.

Whereas the SLRC Report provides a general overview of the direction in which Tufts should head regarding social spaces, this initiative aims to:

document and review the specific physical space needs and spatial inequities experienced by Tufts students, providing a concrete framework of steps the university should address to invest equitably in social spaces for all students.

This is an initiative born out of the TCU Senate Administration and Policy Committee, as well as TCU President Benya Kraus' presidential platform and Urban Studies Senior Capstone.
